In March 1903, a small group of Sydney’s earliest motorists came together with a simple purpose: to foster motoring and assist motorists. They founded the Automobile Club of Australia, the first motoring association in the country.

Those pioneers did more than drive. They persuaded country hoteliers to stock fuel, which created Australia’s first petrol stations. They issued drivers’ competency certificates on behalf of the government, helped shape early motoring law and laid the groundwork for Australian motorsport. In 1919 the Club was granted Royal status. In 1927 it opened its home on Macquarie Street, where it still stands today.

More than 120 years on, the Royal Automobile Club of Australia remains a voice for motorists and a home for everyone who shares a love of the road. Motoring News carries that tradition forward, bringing you the stories, commentary and updates that matter.

We welcome new members. Become part of Australia’s oldest motoring club, enjoy our historic Macquarie Street home and stay connected to the world of motoring.
